The half hour presentation by the
cattlewomen gave the message that beef cattle were PIONEERS
because they came to America with the early explorers; they are
NUTRITIONIST giving zinc, iron, protein, vitamins; cows help
SPORTSMEN with football balls, basket balls, baseballs and mitts
because of the leather from their hide. Cows are MECHANICS. Tires
are made from stearic acid, asphalt has a lubricant. They are
DOCTORS since many different kinds of medicine come from a cow.
Another hero is a FIREFIGHTER, eating the grass so we won't have
fires. They are RECYCLERS, eating almond hulls, citrus pulp, corn
stalks, potato peels, and cows are ENVIRONMENTALISTS since they
use land that can't be used of farming. The cows graze the
grasses and convert them to beef that we can eat. |

Ariel was wearing a cowboy hat because she had caught her calf
when roping. |
|
Bobbi explained that she was a cattle
rancher and she lived on a ranch.
If she found a sick animal she had to doctor it, and to catch it
she had to rope it. Then several children got to rope the calf
heads on the bales of straw with Bobbi and John's help. |

A young teacher from the Mission
district said her class were Second Language Learners and one of
their units had been teaching the vocabulary of the farm, rodeo,
agriculture and farm workers. These were Spanish speaking children
learning how to orally speak the English language.
Each teacher received a packet with beef information, recipes, and
resource kits for the classroom from California Beef Council, and
a 34 page packet from CCW with work sheets on cattle and cattle by
products for use in their classrooms. |
